The quick read
Why go
Pingtung's night market is an everyday old-town food quarter rather than a pop-up: about 200 meters of the streets around Minzu Road and Minquan Road, where most stalls have fixed shopfronts and many have indoor seats. Come for the local staples: ba-wan meatballs with pork sausages, chicken rice, stir-fried eel noodles and old-style bubble ice.
It is ten minutes on foot from TRA Pingtung Station, so it makes an easy dinner stop on a day out from Kaohsiung. Be ready for scooters: the lanes are not closed to traffic and riders come straight through. Stall hours vary, and some of the best-known close early, so do not leave it too late.
What to eat
- Ba-wan (Taiwanese meatballs)
- Pork intestine and rice sausage
- Mackerel thick soup
- Chicken rice
- Stir-fried eel noodles
- Bubble ice and ai-yu jelly ice
New to ba-wan? Our guide to night-market food explains it and the other classics.
Where to find the top stalls
This is a set of streets rather than one enclosed site: shops and stalls fill both sides of Minzu Road and Minquan Road around their junction. Most of the stalls below are fixed shopfronts with house numbers on Minzu Road or Minquan Road, so look for the number. Guides place some shops that carry the market's name a block or two away, such as a mackerel soup shop on Fuxing Road.
Night-market stalls rarely have their own address. We describe each position only as our dated sources state it. If you cannot see it, show the sign text to a vendor nearby. Stalls move and hours change, so check before a special trip.
