The quick read

Why go

Miaodong is Fengyuan's old snack lane, Lane 167 of Zhongzheng Road on the east side of Ciji Temple. It is short, but it packs in family stalls that have been here for decades: fried water caltrop crisps, pork rib noodles, Fengyuan ba-wan, rice dumplings and slow-cooked pineapple ice. Many open before lunch, so it is really a snack street that runs from midday into the evening.

It is under 10 minutes on foot from TRA Fengyuan, which makes the train the easy way in. Take a number for the water caltrop crisps at the first stall on the left, eat a bowl of rib noodles or a ba-wan while you wait, and finish with pineapple ice. It is much smaller than the big city markets, but it is worth the trip if you want old Taichung flavors.

Our tip: Many of the famous stalls close on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, so Friday to Monday is the safest time to find them all open. On weekends, take your caltrop crisp number first, then eat elsewhere while you wait.

Where to find the top stalls

The market is the lane on the east side of Ciji Temple, Lane 167 of Zhongzheng Road. Guides say the main entrance is to the right of the temple. Most famous stalls have house numbers in Lane 167 (No. 1, No. 2-7, No. 2-10 and so on), and guides also mark the first stalls on the left and right as you enter.

Night-market stalls rarely have their own address. We describe each position only as our dated sources state it. If you cannot see it, show the sign text to a vendor nearby. Stalls move and hours change, so check before a special trip.

  • About 7 to 10 minutes on foot from TRA Fengyuan Station
  • Old family stalls with house numbers on Lane 167, so they are easy to find
  • Compact: the main stalls fit in one lane a few hundred meters long

Know before you go

  • Busy on weekends, and the water caltrop stall gives out numbered tickets because of the queue
  • Several famous stalls close one weekday: the rib noodles on Wednesday, the ba-wan on Tuesday, and the rice dumplings and pineapple ice on Thursday (2026 guides)
  • Parking is hard, especially on weekends (2026 guides); the train is easier
