The quick read

Why go

This is the old Taipei night market, the one around Longshan Temple that was feeding the neighborhood long before the city had an MRT. Huaxi Street is the anchor, a covered arcade often called Taiwan's first tourist night market. Guangzhou Street, which Huaxi opens onto, has the open-air snack stalls, Wuzhou Street adds a short run of soups and stews, and Xichang Street leads to the herb sellers. Four streets, one exit from the station, one evening.

Huaxi is still known for snake soup and tonic dishes, and you will see them, but the reason we send people here is the two Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls: steamed minced pork in broth at Hsiao Wang, and guabao at Yuan Fang. Then cross to Guangzhou Street for stinky tofu and sweet potato balls, and finish with a bowl of something herbal on Wuzhou.

Our tip: Go early. The two Michelin stalls on Huaxi Street close around 20:00, so eat there first, see Longshan Temple lit up, then finish on Guangzhou and Wuzhou streets, which run until midnight.
History

What to eat

  • Herbal snake soup and other tonic soups
  • Thick squid soup
  • Oyster omelette
  • Goose
  • Guabao (braised pork belly bun)
  • Stinky tofu and sweet potato balls on Guangzhou Street
  • Mackerel thick soup and herbal mutton hot pot on Wuzhou Street

Where to find the top stalls

Huaxi Street is split in two by Guilin Road, where the archway stands. The Michelin stalls and the braised pork rice are in the covered stretch between Guilin Road and Guiyang Street. Wuzhou Street and Guangzhou Street stalls are listed by the house number they stand in front of.

Night-market stalls rarely have their own address. We describe each position only as our dated sources state it. If you cannot see it, show the sign text to a vendor nearby. Stalls move and hours change, so check before a special trip.

Look for the sign

小王煮瓜

Where: Huaxi Street, stall No. 153, at No. 17-4, about a minute's walk in from the Guilin Road archway. The older sign read 小王清湯瓜仔肉.

Hours: About 09:30 to 20:00. Closed Tuesdays. A daytime stall: it closes before the night market gets busy.

Michelin: Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide.

Strengths

  • Four connected market streets around Longshan Temple, all from one MRT exit
  • Huaxi Street is often called Taiwan's first tourist night market, and it sits under a covered arcade
  • Two 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls on Huaxi Street
  • Pairs naturally with an evening visit to Longshan Temple and Herb Lane on Xichang Street

Know before you go

  • A fire in May 2025 damaged five stall structures at the Huaxi Street entrance (Nos. 2 to 10). We have not confirmed which of those stalls have reopened.
  • Some Huaxi Street stalls still sell snake and other tonic dishes, which not every visitor wants to see
  • Xichang Street is mostly clothing and household goods at the Guangzhou Street end and closes earlier than the rest
  • The two Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls on Huaxi Street are daytime stalls that close around 20:00, before the market is at its busiest
