The quick read
Why go
Shuangcheng is the neat one. Nearly a hundred stalls, every sign the same shade of orange since the city reorganized the street in 2006, and a layout you can walk end to end in a few minutes. It was Taipei's first regional demonstration night market, which is a bureaucratic way of saying it was tidied up on purpose.
It works in shifts: breakfast and lunch stalls by day, a different set from late afternoon until midnight. At night we go for Chiayi-style chicken rice, boiled goose, and braised pork rice, with a cup of aiyu jelly to finish. It is a meal, not a carnival, and it is easy from the hotels in Zhongshan.
What to eat
- Chiayi-style chicken rice
- Boiled goose
- Braised pork rice
- Mitaimu (short rice noodles)
- Aiyu jelly
Where to find the top stalls
The city lists the day and night market as the middle stretch of Shuangcheng Street, from Lanes 10 and 13 to the Nongan Street junction, next to Qingguang Market. In the food street stalls go by stall number; shops in the side lanes use street addresses.
Night-market stalls rarely have their own address. We describe each position only as our dated sources state it. If you cannot see it, show the sign text to a vendor nearby. Stalls move and hours change, so check before a special trip.
